Introduction

The Quality Assurance Unit was established in 2003 under the name Self-evaluation and Enhancement Unit, as one of the internal branches following the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Center at Cairo University and acted as one of the independent units of the Faculty. In 2006, the unit’s heading has been changed to Quality Assurance Unit, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University in alliance with University and national requirements. It is worth mentioning that the initiative of establishing a center for evaluation, enhancement and accreditation at Cairo University emerged in 1999 in order to keep up with the requirements of quality assurance and enhancement of education and its rapidly growing importance regionally and globally. Quality assurance and enhancement has been starting to be regarded as an effective element in the provision of an outstanding educational service and the production of highly competitive graduates, as well as enhancing scientific research and providing services to the society.

The Vision

Introduction and establishment of the culture of regular self-evaluation, continuous enhancement and total quality assurance via creating a common language for the concept of total quality and developing awareness among the academic community, administration and students at the faculty. The ultimate goal is to access quality assurance, accreditation and effective participation in the community services to meet the challenges of the swift progress and win the confidence of the stakeholders in the outputs of the educational system; namely, the graduates, research and professional and community services in conformity with the national, regional and international standards.

The Mission

Create and activate a concrete quality assurance system in all the components of the educational system in the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University and provide continuing assistance to various departments of the Faculty to apply quality assurance standards in all areas and in its academic programs in accordance with the national and global standards, taking into consideration the mission of the Faculty; consequently, qualifying the Faculty to be accredited as a locally and regionally recognized educational institution.

The Strategic Objectives

1. Enhancement of the current curricula for undergraduate and graduate programs in all departments of the Faculty.

2. Development and implementation of an effective evaluation system for the students, the courses and educational programs, and approving self-evaluation as an input to the internal and external audit and application of quality assurance systems to attain accreditation.

3. Introduction and establishment of the culture of regular self-evaluation, continuous enhancement and total quality assurance via creating a common language for the concept of total quality and developing awareness among the academic community, administration and students at the faculty to attain quality assurance and accreditation.

4. Participation in the community services and meeting the challenges of the swift progress and win the confidence of the stake holders in the outputs of the educational system, namely, the graduates, research and professional and community services in conformity with the national, regional and international standards.

5. Design and application of the appropriate model for performance evaluation which integrates all the components of the higher education system and complies with the national, regional and international standards.

6. Fully and pragmatically diagnosing the constraints of performance development and proposing solutions and developing enhancement plans.

7. Capacity building in the field of performance evaluation and quality assurance and accreditation.

8. Cooperation with the quality assurance and accreditation units and centers, committees, bodies and organizations, at the national and regional levels.

 

Activities of the Unit

1. Holding seminars and awareness workshops for quality assurance and the Unit’s activities and objectives for Faculty members, teaching assistants, and administration personnel in the Faculty.

2. Conducting a wide scope research to identify the systems and mechanisms for quality assurance and accreditation in place world-wide.

3. Conducting training courses for staff members in the areas of course and program specification, teaching skills and practical training, modern teaching techniques and interactive teaching.

4. Organizing workshops for staff members in the areas of self-evaluation strategies, e-learning skills, decision-making, communication skills and time management.

5. Preparing a comprehensive program and course specification for all Faculty programs, and Faculty annual reports.

6. Preparing regular reports on quality assurance and accreditation in the Faculty.

7. Coordination and cooperation with organizations and educational institutions involved in quality assurance and accreditation.

8. Organizing field visits to organizations and educational institutions concerned in quality assurance and accreditation.

9. Documentation and dissemination of the quality assurance and accreditation systems at the Faculty and establish its sustainability and enhancement.

10. Issuing periodic bulletins on the activities and outputs of the Unit.

 

Intended Outputs and Outcomes of the Unit

1. Update and design the academic programs and courses in compliance with the international standards and specifications.

2. Adjust the educational process to be an outcome based process, integrating the objectives of the entire programs with the objectives of the Faculty and University.

3. Prepare program and course specifications with appropriate intended learning outcomes.

4. Attain adequate information through program and course reports and Faculty annual report, which allows taking decisions and making recommendations to enhance learning and increase the effectiveness of programs and faculty members.

5. Prepare normative standards and indicators to determine the strengths and weaknesses.

6. Establish quality assurance and academic accreditation system.

7. Establish the concept of self-evaluation and initiate rules and standards to evaluate the academic performance and learning outcomes.

8. Identify resources and educational mechanisms appropriate to achieve the intended learning outcomes, and specifying the proper tools and assessment methods.

9. Systemize the process of evaluating the intended learning outcomes of the programs allowing it to proceed according to specific steps and stages to ensure the accuracy of the sequence of actions used in the evaluation process, which must be simple, flexible and compatible with the structure of academic programs.

10. Connect the process of evaluating the intended learning outcomes with the teaching methodology adopted, thus making it applicable and ensuring responsive and effective participation of students in all activities.

11. Ensure the involvement of all stakeholders in all stages of the educational process.

12. Disseminate the culture of evaluation and make it an essential component of academic culture prevailing in the Faculty with identifying effective methods for follow-up of academic quality.

13. Make the academic advising and the administrative supervision of the evaluation process an element of the core duties of the Dean and Heads of Departments.

14. Document all elements of the learning process.

15. Obtain transparent, accurate and useful information about the student progression and achievement which can be used to improve the performance of the academic programs.

16. Ensure the suitability and compatibility of the academic programs to the needs of beneficiaries, stakeholders and labor market and fulfilling their aspirations and expectations.

17. Establish rules and structures for quality management.

18. Apply of the annual internal quality assurance audit.
